A tattoo is made permanent when the ink is injected into the second layer of skin known as the dermis - it is the layer below the epidermis. Just like laser therapy, IPL has the ability to penetrate through the top epidermal skin layers to the dermis where the pigment resides.
This is where IPL (Intense Pulsed light) is considered superior since it can deliver intense heat deeper into the dermal layers to fragment and displace ink particles. IPL is now sometimes considered a safer, more effective option than tradition laser technology and is now commonly used for tattoo removal. Lasers technology has also come a long way from even as recently as 10 years ago when the treatments were far more painful than today and would most likely leave a scar in place of your tattoo.
Before being used for removing tattoos, IPL was commonly recommended for skin resurfacing, treating wrinkles and fine lines, spider veins uneven skin tone and for acne scars.
It uses a broad spectrum of light that is considered gentler on skin. It has been known to reduce the risk of burning or blistering but just like laser therapy, it often requires more than one treatment for the best results.
Since this therapy is so gentle, there is really no down time. It is considered a ‘lunch-time’ treatment. It is also considered safer than older laser therapy for use on darker skin tones since the risk of pigmentation changes is reduced, however it is still a possibility.
Some other things to keep in mind when considering IPL:
Although the risk of burning and scarring is quite low with, the deeper the treatment into the dermal layers the better the results, generally, but the risks of burning are still present. This will depend heavily on the knowledge of the technician. Be sure to ask about their training, experience and seeing some of their patient’s before and after pictures is also a good idea.
You may have pink skin in the treated area as well as a loss of some natural pigmentation. Also be sure to treat your skin with a higher-level sunscreen or sun block since the treated area will be light-sensitive.
One of the best advantages of IPL over traditional laser is that IPL technology makes use of a prism. Since different colors of pigment require treatment by specific colors of light, from varying wavelengths of light, IPL can deliver the entire light spectrum in one shot. This means that all possible light colors can be delivered to your ink. Each ink pigment will be affected by the correct light color which is delivered naturally by the IPL equipment.

Excision for small tattoos, where the tattoo is actually cut out and the wound stitched is rarely carried out these days. Scarring is inevitable, certainly in the short term.
For some, the cheaper alternative to removal has been a cover up, where one tattoo is applied over another. Results are not always successful, as some before and after tattoo removal pictures show.

The thing about laser tattoo removal methods is that they are gentler than many other solutions and are proven to be effective in a majority of cases. However, getting laser treatments is pricey and it’s also an ongoing process. One session will not break up the strong molecules of color that have bonded with your skin. After perhaps 8-10 sessions, the tattoo will be starting to disappear, as the ink particles will have become small enough that the body can process and eliminate them via natural detoxification pathways.
So what are the options for non-laser tattoo removal? Well if you’re serious and you don’t want to spend weeks on the project, holding your arm to the light to see if the picture is any lighter after each session (and what if it’s somewhere you can’t see it without a carefully placed mirror?), then you might want to consider having the sucker surgically removed by a medically trained professional. While you need to factor in a good deal of ‘healing time’, surgical excision is the most efficient method of removing a tattoo.
Keep in mind though; a large tattoo is going to leave behind a large patch of nothing when the tattoo is removed. That section of threadbare skin is going to need some help to regenerate; meaning they will have to harvest some healthy skin from elsewhere on your body. So while laser treatments may take a while, the surgical option is going to leave you with a very sore tattoo spot as well as potentially another painful area where the skin graft was sourced (usually the backside).
You can try to fade a tattoo using various over-the-counter treatments, but this is very hit and miss and will at best start to fade the brightness a little bit. There is very little you can do at home, in the comfort of your own bathroom, to get rid of a tattoo. Tattoos are meant to be permanent, so without some serious intervention of the laser or scalpel kind, you are pretty much stuck with it.
If you’ve had enough of the skull and cross bones you chosen aged 16, a skilled artist could maybe turn that into a sleek panther or Christmas angel.
There are options beyond laser treatments, but there is no magic solution. Getting rid of an unwanted tattoo is a tricky and costly business.
