One reason people sometimes prefer TCA tattoo removal products over fading creams is the list of controversial ingredients in many tattoo fade creams. These ingredients often include additives such as parabens (preservatives), soothing agents, fragrances as well as abrasives and skin bleaching or fading agents.

Some of the more common skin fading/bleaching ingredients along with some of their side effects include:

Hydroquinone - Is a phenol long used as a skin lightener. Some testing indicates it has potential for carcinogenicity.  It has now been banned for use in cosmetic in all of the 21 EU nations, in Australia and some other Asian nations.  It is still available over the counter in the US and Canada but in very low concentrations

Kojic Acid - Is a by-product fermentation during the process of make sake -  the Japanese rice wine. For tattoo creams and cosmetics it is used as a skin lightener. It is often a hydroquinone substitute.   It has been known to irritate skin and there is growing evidence that it may be carcinogenic.

Alpha-Arbutin - It is a cheaper alternative to hydroquinon and kojic acid and known to act quickly to lighten skin. It inhibits the production of an enzyme in the epidermal layers of skin that produces melanin – the chemical that darkens your skin naturally.

Arbutin – Is sometimes referred to as bearberry extract. It is known to be less effective than Alpha Arbutin. Arbutin and Beta Arbutin are less expensive additives and are in wide use among tattoo fading creams, although they have been known to cause skin irritation.

Parabens – These are preservatives widely used in the cosmetics industry. They are considered to be effective preservatives and are contained in many consumer products like popular shampoos and even toothpaste. They are also used extensively in food but are becoming more controversial and some in the health community object to their use. Some of the more common types include: propyl-paraben and methyl/ethyl-parabens. These can also be found in some tattoo removal creams. The main concern with them is they may be cancer causing..

Mercury - Is often found in cosmetic products and can be found in some tattoo cream products but not in TCA tattoo peel products. It is highly toxic by ingestion or inhalation of its dust particles. Since the FDA does not certify cosmetics (including tattoo removal creams) this element is still widely used.

Not all skin bleaching products have their ingredients listed on their websites. It is up to the consumer to find out what kinds of harmful ingredients may be contained so try to gather as much information as you can prior to making a purchasing decision.

FDA says Nuviderm Tattoo Removal Cream Is Hazardous to Customers and Should Be Banned

The FDA hit Nuviderm.com with a warning letter over "serious violations" at a facility at 2951 Marina Bay Dr # 130-478, League City, TX, USA over their featured product "Nuviderm".

According to the FDA, "Nuviderm" is essentially a "highly hazardous chemical skin peel."

A chemical skin peel involves the application of a solution to the entire face or to specific areas of the body to peel away the skin's top layers. The product "Nuviderm" claims to essentially "peel away" the users tattoo by burning and peeling the skin layer-by-layer until the tattoo is no longer visible.

Nuviderm's main ingredient is trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA has been used in a variety of government studies, experiments and tests; however, there is no official approval by the FDA for the acid's use as a licensed topical cream.

The watchdog agency says the company Nuviderm.com inc., failed to obtain regulatory approval for a clinical study before enrolling human subjects.

Nuviderm.com inc.'s study on its TCA Tattoo Fade and Removal Cream included the implantation of the test on 750 subjects, according to the warning letter.  (http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cdrh_docs/reviews/K061069.pdf)

Since the study, health professionals have seen an increased amount of hypo-pigmentation in the subjects skin development. Hypo-pigmentation is when the top layer of the skin has spotted patches of lighter or darker pigment.

The majority of cases of hypo-pigmentation has been observed in subjects with darker skin pigment. Furthermore, the subjects of the study have formed a union with a group of unsatisfied customers and have pursued legal action.

A class-action lawsuit first filed in federal court in Illinois has been re-filed in Madison County accusing the League City, TX based Nuviderm.com inc of being a "scam", "fraud", "rip-off", "snake-oil salesmen" etc.

The class action filed in Madison County this month launches similar allegations as those made by the attorneys general. St. Louis attorney Jay Kanzler, one of several lawyers bringing the class-action suit, tells Daily Press that his team is representing more than a thousand alleged victims in the states of Illinois, Missouri, Utah and Georgia.

"What Nuviderm.com inc. has done to these innocent people is disgraceful," says Kanzler. He adds, "I will make sure that every victim is compensated… in FULL… one million times for these crimes!" the charismatic Chicago lawyer asserted.

In January 2011, the company failed to submit a required investigational exemption to the FDA because of the risks posed to the study's participants.

The FDA considers Nuviderm.com inc.'s TCA Tattoo Fade and Removal Cream, and other topical Tattoo Removal Creams a "significant risk" because of the high concentration of acid in the solution, and furthermore these acidic creams "present a potential for serious risk to the health, safety, or welfare" of an individual.

Sure. This review will focus on how they do it.

TatMed was born of a new generation of thinking about tattoo removal products.  It had to happen. A number of ingredients in older tattoo removers turned out to be risky at best and unsafe at worst. Several countries placed outright bans on skin products containing one common chemical, hydroquinone. Unfortunately, it can still be found in some tattoo removers marketed in the US, in spite of a link to cancer.

The challenge was to create a tattoo remover that avoided dangerous chemicals.  TatMed developers found an answer in Alpha Arbutin, and Kojic acid.  Both ingredients have been found safe for use on the skin.  Tat-Med's ingredients do not damage skin: avoiding the pain, blistering and cracking strong chemicals can cause.

The ingredients in TatMed work differently than other tattoo removers. Many tatoo removal products depend on TCA (Trichloroacetic acid). TCA is a skin peeling acid, and that tells the story. Tattoo removers using TCA and hydroquinone work by burning off layers of tattooed skin, causing them to peel. It was once thought to be the only way to fade a tattoo.

The TatMed formula works to draw inked layers of skin to the surface, where the body replaces skin constantly. Use of an exfoliating pad is necessary for this process to work. There is a tradeoff: it takes time, and repeated applications, for Tat-Med to work. However, for the amount of money and pain one can save, many of those with unwanted tattoos are now using topical tattoo removal creams and gels more than ever.

Have you decided to get rid of your tattoo?

Thankfully there are now several available methods to remove tattoos when circumstances and times change

You may be aware that the most common and effective method for tattoo removal is achieved with laser treatments.  This technique involves a high-intensity light beam that breaks up the tattoo pigment.  The ink is then slowly absorbed through your body’s immune system.  This technique is known to be painful and expensive it normally requiring several follow-up sessions.

Lasers tends to work very effectively with tattoo inks applied by professional artists since the ink is usually at the same depth within your skin.  The pigments that usually respond well are the darker ones such as: black, dark red and blue. The more difficult colors are:  greens, yellows, light reds and oranges.  It is not unheard of for patients to require as many as 12 visits in a period spaced out over three month intervals.

A few other methods of tattoo removal are:

Dermabrasion:  This method of tattoo removal was quite popular before lasers came along in the 1990s.  It involves manual abrasion (sanding) of the skin to remove the top layers of skin above the tattoo. This can be painful, especially with a larger tattoo. This removal method has been known to cause scarring.

Intense Pulse Light Therapy:  IPL is one of the newer methods of tattoo removal. Lasers often use one wavelength of light (one color) but IPL can deliver hundreds or even thousands of colors all at once. An anesthetic usually applied to the tattooed area a wand emits the pulses through a prism.  It is less painful than laser therapy and is known to require fewer treatment sessions, but the price is often higher than laser treatments: per pulse is often charged.

Cryosurgery: This method is now considered an outdated option for tattoo removal. The tattooed area is first covered with liquid nitrogen, or another freezing agent.  This makes the procedure fairly painless while it is happening, however after the skin thaws minor to moderate pain can set in. After the tattooed area is frozen the physician will peel the tattoo off one section at a time. Redness and blistering are common, but the area usually scabs over and begins to peel away within about a week.

Creams have become a common alternative to lasers and these other methods for tattoo removal.  There are verying opinions as to their efficacy, however you can find many favourable reviews of some of these products.  Many people have used them to ‘lessen’ the appearance of a tattoo prior to laser therapy.  This approach can drastically reduce your overall cost since laser sessions can easily cost a few hundred dollars per visit.

Many of these creams work by slowly peeling the topmost layer of skin (the epidermis). Some others claim to penetrate into deeper layers of skin and dissolves the embedded ink within the dermal skin layers. Some of these claims may be based on fact however it is really up the consumer to research the available information on ingredients, testing results, side effects and the efficacy of these creams. For every cream that delivers on its promises of effectiveness there are probably ten that are worthless.  It makes a lot of sense to read customer reviews and use the experiences of others as a guide.

The effectiveness of these tattoo removal creams will also depend on the following factors:

Location of the tattoo (forearm and ankle tattoos generally take longest Type of ink used Colors of the ink Skin type Amount of ink that was used Scarring or tissue change Your body’s ability to heal and rid itself of the ink Whether the tattoo was done professionally or by an amateur

A small tattoo will obviously be easier to remove than a larger one. A denser tattoo with more dark ink used and varying colors will also be more difficult to remove. A newer tattoo also takes more work to remove than an old one. Do not expect that all of these creams will produce miracle results, check for guarantees and user feedback and keep in mind that these products take time to work, persistence is often the key.
